Attestation papers were sgned 4 Jun 1915 in Niagara, Ontario. James Harry Purt was born 12 Nov 1893 in England. He was a farmer by trade. His NExt of Kin was his Mother, Martha Purt of Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England. 5'6" in height with blue eyes and light brown hair, he had 5 vaccination marks on his left arm. His faith was listed as Church of England.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers and Circumstances of Casualty state that he had previously been reported missing, and then to have died. His Next of Kin was Mrs. Martha Purt of 15 Pelican Court, Eastgate Street, Bury St. Edmund, England. His body was not recovered for burial, his name is listed on Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium.

Toronto Star Newspaper reported on 12 Jun 1917 that Pte. J. H. Purt who had enlisted at the Niagara Camp in 1915 with one of the so-called Third Contingent battalions had died. After being in the trenches since the beginning on 1916 he had been fatally wounded.
