In 1892, William Cater, 11 (along with brothers, Thomas Cater, 10, and Alfred Cater, 9), arrived at Quebec, along with a group of 85 children from Middlemore Home in Birmingham, England, en route to Macpherson Home in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. (This is an unusual circumstance for Middlemore children to be placed in Stratford, Ontario.)

In 1901, William Cater, 23, was shown as a servant / farm laborer to Donald and Lizzie Hanning of Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario, Canada. His date of birth is shown as January 2, 1878, and his immigration year is not shown.

In October of 1905, William's mother, Sarah Cater, and siblings, Beatrice Cater; Harold Cater; and Eva Cater, all arrived in Canada on the Bavarian. The Family settled in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. (EDITORS NOTE: Sarah Warner Cater died in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, on October 16, 1926, of hernia hemiplegia and heart failure.)

In 1911, William Cater, 36, labourer in a moulder shop, was shown residing at the home of his mother, Sarah Cater, 16, at 90 Durham, Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada. Other family members included Beatrice Cater, 21; Harold Cater, 20; Eva Cater, 14; and lodger, Frank Spancer. 24. His date of birth is shown as January 1875, and his immigration year as 1890.

On June 4, 1919, at Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between William Cater, 41, laborer, born in Fulham, England, to Alfred Cater and Sarah Warner; and Sarah Davies, 39, housekeeper, born in Manchester, England, to Joseph Davies and Emily Ross. His brother, Thomas Cater, was a witness to the marriage.

William's sister, Beatrice Maud Cater, married another home child, Joseph McCandless, in Gueph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, on August 15, 1923.
