NotesA birth registration was found for James Alfred Essex: Year of Registration: 1891; Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun; District: Warwick (To 1932); County: Warwickshire; Volume: 6d; Page: 633. Parents: James Alfred Essex and Edith Reynolds.

James Alfred Essex was my maternal grandfather. He lived in Birmingham and told me how he remembered selling newspapers when Queen Victoria died. His story is typical - a poor family, mostly absent father and numerous siblings.

In 1903, James Essex, 13 (along with sister Edith Essex, 9) arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 124 Middlemore children.

He and his sister Edith were sent to New Brunswick. My grandfather told me that he was supposed to be earning some wages which would be held for him until he was of a certain age. That time came and no wages were forthcoming.

On July 27, 1915, at Welland, Ontario, Canada, James Alfred Essex, 23, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Birmingham, England; that his next of kin was Mr. James Essex, who resided at 9 Whitehead Court, Leamington, England; that his date of birth was May 7, 1892; that he was a labourer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 9 inches in height; fair complexion; blue eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England.

He went on to serve at Vimy Ridge.

He returned to Canada, and on September 30, 1919, at 5 Oak Street, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between James Alfred Essex, 26, born in England to James A. Essex (mother's name not shown); and Annie Victoria Clinton, 18, born in Maxwell, Ontario, Canada, to Wm C Clinton and Elizabeth J. Brownridge

James and Annie Essex settled in Crowland (Welland), Ontario where they raised his family of a son and 3 daughters. He was a Deputy Reeve of Crowland Township during the 30's.

He died in 1970.

I have recently discovered the existence of other siblings who were also sent to Canada via Middlemore.
