NotesJames was born in Athlone, Co Westmeath, Ireland. His father deserted his army regiment, leaving his mother to care for James and his younger brother. As she was destitute and living in the Athlone Workhouse, she placed James in care of Barnardos. He spent time in various Barnardos homes in England before being sent to Canada in 1912.
