NotesFred Dayes was admitted into Barnardo's Home on Stepney Causeway in 1919. He was illegitimate, and his widowed mother had died in 1915. His half-sister took him in to raise with her own 3 children, but when she was widowed as well, had to admit them into Dr. Barnardo's Home. Because Fred was only her half-brother, they would not take the Canada Clause from his admission contract. He was fostered out in Blewbury, Oxfordshire for a few months prior to his sailing to Canada.

In 1921, Frederick Dayes, 10, arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick, along with a group of 133 Barnardo children en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

His juvenile inspection report shows:

First placement with William J Hanna, Janetville, Durham Co.

1922-1928 with J Clarence Ginn, Burketon, Durham Co. (In 1925 inspector did not see him as the family was attending a ball game.)

1929 with R C Brown, Burketon.

Among Barnardo documents is a letter thanking a Mr. George Rippin of 51 Clissold Road, Stoke Newington, London, N16 for his interest in Fred's progress. This is also a letter from Barnardo's to Fred telling him that a Mr. George Rippin had taken an interest in his welfare & wanted to hear from him. Fred wrote to Barnardos later saying he had sent the man a letter but heard no reply. Barnardo's was still sending the man progress reports on Fred Dayes as late as 1931 when Fred was 20.

Years after Fred Dayes was grown and married with children a neighbor phoned his wife telling her that they found Fred's Barnardo trunk in a home they were cleaning out after the owner had died. The neighbor asked if he wanted the trunk back. Fred said no, he didn't want to see it again.
