Notes Augustus was known as "Fred" while he served as a farm hand in several locations in the Dufferin County area. He ran away from his homes a couple of times which suggests that he had a difficult time with his employers. At the age of fifteen he underwent a successful appendicitis operation but got out of bed resulting in the stitches becoming infected. Sadly, he died on February 19, 1911. He was buried in Shelburne Cemetery in what was an unmarked and unrecorded grave until 2004. With the help of the local funeral director in Shelburne, his grand-nephew discovered the single grave bought and paid for by Barnardo's. It now has an appropriate marker to celebrate his short life.
Augustus was the brother of Edward Youngman, also a home child. Sadly, they never saw each other after Edward was sent to Canada in 1904 even though they were living and working a mere thirty miles from each other at one point.
