Family and friends helped the family out for a while after the death of Charlotte. John Dunn, along with sister, Rosa, and brother, Richard, were admitted to Barnardos Child Care on September 6, 1904.
In 1905, John Dunn, 10, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 163 Barnardo children (162 boys and 1 girl) en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
On June 19, 1915, at Belleville, Ontario, Canada, John Dunn, 19, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Bitterford, England; that his next of kin was his sister, Rose Dunn, who resided at Peterboro, Ontario, Canada; that his date of birth was October 8, 1896; and that he was a farmer. He was a member of the Church of England. He was described as 5 foot 4 inches in height; medium complexion; blue eyes; red hair. He had a scar of scald on left shine-bone to ankle and a scar of dog bite on outer side of right arm.
John Dunn was killed in action December 14, 1917 and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France (Grave Reference: XXXI. D. 29).
