In 1881, Mary Jane Hampson, 8 years of age, was shown as an inmate at Leigh Union Workhouse, Atherton, Lancashire, England. Other family members residing there were Alice Hampson, 3; Ellen Hampson, 36, married, housewife; Joshua Hampson, 11; and Ellen Hampson, 1. In 1889, Mary Jane Hampson, 16 (along with her sister, Ellen Hampson, 8), arrived at Quebec, Canada, with a group of 37 National Children's Home girls en route to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

On December 31, 1892, Mary Jane Hampson, 20, servant, died of phthsis (tuberculosis) and is buried in Dr. Stephenson's Home Children plot in Hamilton.
