In 1881, Edward is not living at his parents' home. There are three Edward Abbotts at this time of the appropriate age living as lodgers and/or servants in Lincolnshire. Times must have grown hard as at least four more children were born into the William Abbott family. They had moved to Bourn, Lincolnshire, England. Both William, 46 and William, Jr., 15, are employed as farm servants.

On November 8, 1893, a marriage took place at 144 Bloor Street East, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, between Edward Abbott and Sarah Elizabeth Wilkinson (daughter of John and Sarah Wilkinson). Edward declared that he was born in England; that he was 30 years of age; that he was a coachman; that his parents names were William and Jane Abbott; and he resided in Toronto.
