NotesParents: Thomas Bird and Frances Giles, married 1854, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England.

In 1874 she was a charge of the the Bromsgrove Union Workhouse in the County of Worcestershire, England. Her father Thomas was an inmate in the Workhouse Hospital at the time and gave Jane and her sister Eliza up to be emigrated to Canada.

In 1874, Jane Bird, 6 (along with sister, Eliza Bird, 9), arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 148 Maria Rye children en route to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.

Jane was "adopted" by a George Turner and family who gave her the name of Turner.

A 1875 Inspection Report reflects:

Chatham Centre - E Scane & Mr McCrae, Inspectors, 8, Bromsgrove Union Workhouse 1874, MC, goes to Church & Sunday School, with Geo Turner, Head St, Chatham, adopted, usual terms, here 2 years, housework. Well cared for, rather wilful, good place.
