NotesParents: William Payne and Amelia Purvor, married 1871, London, Middlesex, England.

My grandmother (George's daughter) never spoke about her family. What I know I have gathered from available public records. George's mother died in 1881 and his father died in 1889 when George was 13. His eldest sister was 17 and working as a servant. His youngest sister had already been sent to live with her aunt in Oxfordshire after her mother died. George and his older brother James were left alone.

In 1893, George Payne, 17, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 62 Fegan boys en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

There are few records until his marriage to my great-grandmother (Mary Goater) in Toronto in 1907. The marriage was arranged as she only arrived in Canada a few months prior specifically to marry George. George and Mary were first cousins.

On October 19, 1907, at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between George Henry Payne, 31, painter, born in England to James Alfred Payne and Amelia Purves; and Mary Goater, 24, born in England to John James Goater and Eliza Purves.

At least 5 children were born of this marriage: John William Payne, born May 4, 1908, in Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, died April 6, 1926, in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada; Rosa Mary Payne, born February 1, 1910, in Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, died June 6, 1980, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; George Payne, born July 12, 1914, in Cochrane, Ontario, Canada, died April 15, 1920, in Orilla, Ontario, Canada; and James Alfred Payne, born October 6, 1918, in Cochrane, Ontario, Canada, died January 11, 1987, in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada.

Mary died in 1919, followed shortly after by their son George in 1920, both dying of influenza.

On July 1, 1919, at Cochrane, Ontario, Canada, Mary Payne, 34, born in London, England, died of pneumonia myocarditis, 4 weeks duration.

George was left with 5 children, 2 of whom were in institutions. He moved to Vancouver with 3 children, eventually leaving his 2 daughters in Vancouver and returning to Ontario with his youngest son. George died in 1936 in Cochrane, Ontario of prostate cancer.

On June 17, 1936, George Henry Payne, 60, painter, died of carcinoma of prostate with secondary metastases, at Lady Minto Hospital, Cochrane, Ontario, Canada. His informant was his son, James A. Payne, who stated that he was born in Oxford, England; that he was widowed, and that he had lived in Canada for 44 years. George Payne was buried in Cochrane Protestant Cemetery on June 19, 1936.

I believe that his older brother James also came to Canada, but we can find no record of him. We do have some pictures of a man in a railway uniform which we believe is him.
