NotesThe following records have been discerned for Private Ernest Beresford Rowland.

A possible matching 1901 English Census record places Dora and William Rowland in Chichester, Sussex, England with their children William (8), Ernest (6), Jessie (3) and Albert 8 months. William is a Brick Layer by trade.
A later 1911 Census places young Jessie Rowlands as 13 years of age born in Chichester, Sussex in the household of her Uncle at 72 Harold Road Southsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire. Her relatives were Emily and George Burr.

Attestation papers signed 1 Mar 1915 in Ottawa, Ontario. Ernest Beresford Rowland was born 25 Dec 1894 in Portsmouth, England. He was a Farmer by occupation. His Next of Kin was Dora Rowland, his mother, of 295 Reginald Road, Portsmouth but that information was crossed out with Warren Avenue, Laundry, Milton, Portsmouth written by hand. 5' 5 1/2" in height with blue eyes and dark brown hair, he had a mole under his lip. His religion was listed as Church of England.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers and Circumstances of Casualty both state he was Killed in Action. He died in the trenches south east of Thiepval, Somme, Picardie, France. His body was not recovered, his name is listed on the Vimy Memorial in Vimy, Nord Pas de Calais, France.
