In 1908, Joseph McCandless, 12, arrived at Quebec, Canada, along with 91 children accompanied by Mr. J M Merry and en route to the Macpherson Home in Stratford, Ontario, Canada.
On October 13, 1917, Joseph McCandless, 21, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided at R. R. #2, St. George, Ontario, Canada; that he was born June 21, 1896, in Londonderry, Ireland; that he was single; that he was of the Methodist faith; and that his next of kin was his sister, Miss Sarah McCandless, who resided at 21 Broadroad, Sale, Cheshire, England (originally he had put his mother, Mary Jane McCandless, but this was crossed out.) He was described as 5 foot 2-1/4 inches in height; dark complexion; brown eyes; black hair.
On August 15, 1923, in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Joseph McCandless, 26, labourer, born in Londonderry, Ireland, to Laur. and Mary Jane McCandless; and Beatrice Maud Cater, 29, reeler in a textile factory, born in Birmingham, England, to Alfred Cater and Sarah Warner. (Ironically, Beatrice's three brothers, William Cater; Thomas Cater; and Alfred Cater, were all Middlemore boys.)
Joseph and Beatrice Cater McCandless had one child: Harvey McCandless, who was born March 12, 1927 in Ontario, Canada and died March 6, 1962, in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
