Matthew's sisters Mary, Margaret and Elizabeth or Lizzie arrived in Canada in 1911 aboard the 'Hesperian'.

Attestation papers were signed 13 Dec 1915 in Smith Falls, Ontario. Matthew Paton was born 12 Jun 1897 in Glasgow, Scotland. He was a farmer by trade. His Next of Kin was his sister, Lizzie Paton, of Arnprior, Ontario, Canada. 5' 1 1/2" in height with grey eyes and brown hair, as well as two scars on his left leg below the knee and two vaccination marks on his left arm. His religion was listed as Presbyterian.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers and Circumstances of Casualty state that he was Killed in Action by enemy machine gun fire while acting as a company runner during an attack on enemy positions south east of Cagnicourt, Nord Pas de Calais, France. His Next of Kin was his sister, Lizzie Paton of Box 437 Brockville, Ontario and then James Paton of 11 Gleneagles Terrace, Scotstown by Glasgow, Scotland. He was buried in Dominion Cemetery, Hendecourt-les-Cagnicourt, Nord Pas de Calais, France. Plot: I. F. 24.
