On the 13 April 1905 - William Skell Foottit was admitted to Dr. Barnardo's together with his sister Lilian and brother Arthur.

On 15 April 1905 - William was placed at Mittendorf House, High Road, Epsom, Surrey, England on 22 June 1905

William and his brother Arthur sailed with a party of Dr. Barnardos children to Canada aboard the Southwark arriving in Quebec on 1 July 1905.

On 3 July 1905 - William was placed with Mr. George F. Elliot at Millbrook, Ontario (Arthur was also placed in Millbrook with another family)

On 17 November 1906 - Mrs. Elliot died, William went to a Mr. James Fee in the Millbrook area.

On March 29, 1915, at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, William Foottit, 22, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he had been born in Hull, England; that his next of kin was his sister, Lizzie Foottit, who resided at 3 Wharne Street, Hull, England; that his date of birth was April 24, 1892; that he was a farmer; that he was not married; and that he belonged to the 3rd PWC Dragoons Militia. He was described as 5 foot 6 inches in height; fair complexion; grey eyes; dark brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England.

17 March 1916 - William was reported to be a Corporal in B. Squadron of the 8th C.M. Rifles, C.E.F., c/o Allies P.O., London, England

24 March 1917 - Barnardo's heard that William had been taken prisoner in Germany

5 February 1918 - William's address was 113220 4th C.M.R., Block II, Senne Lager, West Phalen, Germany. It was reported that about five months after arrival in France William and his comrades had exhausted their ammunition and were captured by the Germans. He was said to be doing farm work and parcels of food had been sent to him from the Anglican Church at Millbrook.

On December 25, 1919, William Skell Foottit married Sarah Ann Cooper in Hull, Yorkshire East Riding, England. One child was born of this marriage: George Earnest Foottit, born December, 1921, in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, East Riding, England, died August 1997, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
