In the 1901 British Census, Robert Watson, age 3, is found with Robert Watson, 46, a retired bronzing machine maker; Annie Watson, 29; William Watson, 18, a whitesmith apprentice; Ada Watson, 5; and Peter, 1 month, at 57 Aberdeen Walk, in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England. In 1911, Robert is shown as servant to Whilliam and Eliza Whitsett in Moore, Lambton, Ontario, Canada. Robert stated his birthdate was March, 1898.
On September 25, 1915, Robert (who stated his name was John Robert Watson) joined the Canadian Armed Forces. He stated he his birthdate was March 10, 1897, that he was a labourer, that his next of kin was Mrs. W. G. Whitsett, that she was his aunt, and that he was single. Interestingly, the document has originally typed in "next-of-kin" as Annie Watson (mother), who lived at Scarborough, Yorkshire, England.
