NotesA marriage took place between George Barley and Lavina Todd on the 4th October 1869 at Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, England.

In 1881, Mary L. Barley, 3 years of age, was residing at 8 Priscilla Road, Bromley St Leonard, London, England. Other family members included: George Barley, Head, 34, Railway Servant, Lavina Barley, 34, Frank Barley, 10, Helen G. Barley, 8, Percy R. Barley, 3; and Maud E. Barley, 1. The youngest son, Percy Richard Barley, age 4, died Poplar District, London, England, in the December quarter of 1882. (FreeBMD)

A death registration was found for George Barley: Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847; Year of Registration: 1886; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; Age at Death: 39; District: Greenwich
County: Greater London, Kent, London; Volume: 1d; Page: 782.

According to the Maria Rye report on Mary's sister, Maud, their Mother (Lavinia) was was remarried to a J(?) Stamford. Miss Rye's report stated "Mother ill unable to care for girl stepfather a bad man."

In 1891, Mary L. Barley, 16, general servant, is shown as a visitor at Canal Bank, 1 Bedford Place, Camberwell, Surrey, England, in the household of: Charles Tompkins, 39, Butcher; Hannah Tompkins, 40. (Source 1891 Census of England: RG12/474/50, page 28)

In 1891, Mary Barley, 14 (along with her sister, Maud Barley, 11), arrived at Quebec, Canada, with a group of of 50 children en route to Niagara-on-the-Lake, via Toronto, Ontario, Canada, accompanied by Miss Soffe matron.

A death registration was found for Lavinia Stamford (Mary's mother): Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847; Year of Registration: 1892; Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec; Age at Death: 45; District: Pancras (1837-1901); County: London, Middlesex; Volume: 1b; Page: 32.
