Notes I believe his parents were Sydney Austin Wayling and Frances Sarah Strudwick. Both parents died in the spring/summer of 1924 and all other siblings were already deceased except for an older sister Minnie Elizabeth Wayling whom I believe was ill with TB and at a sanitarium. She later married a William Wilson Gardner, I believe, in 1930, and had at least one child, a daughter Joan.
Next of kin given on passenger record as Dr Barnardo Homes, Stepney Cause Way, London, intended occupation given as farming.
After a few tough go-rounds, Bert was fortunate to become a member of the MacLean family of Appin, Ontario.
Bert served as a member of the Canadian Army, mostly in Montreal, in World War II after enlisting at Melbourne Ontario. I believe he worked on airplane engines but I am not absolutely positive.
Bert and Eileen did travel back to Oxted and did make contact with some surviving family members (maybe a sister or an aunt) who had been in a sanitarium. This must have been Minnie.
He was interviewed by Kenneth Bagnell for his book The Little Immigrants: The Orphans Who Came to Canada (1987). One of his placement misadventures is touched on there as well as a meaningful few hours spent with a Mr. Hopday (?).
Bert remained an avid golfer up until the summer before his death when his cancer prevented walking the distance to play even just 9 holes!
