In 1909, Ernest Allen, 15, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 25 children from the National Childrens Home and en route to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
On February 15, 1916, at Athens, Ontario, Canada, Ernest John Allen, 21, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided in Athens, Ontario, Canada; that he was born in Norton Sub Hamdon, England; that his next of kin was his mother, Mary Allen, who resided in Norton Sub Hamdon, England; that his date of birth was July 24, 1894; that he was a labourer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 9 inches in height; fair compelxion; blue eyes; fair hair. He had a scar on his right arm at the elbow. He was a member of the Church of England.
While in the 156th Canadian Infantry Battalion the company had taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion in France on 18 or 19 January 1918. Ernest was wounded on 2 or 3 September 1918. He rejoined the battalion on 13 September 1918. Once again, he was wounded on 28 September 1918 and invalided to England on 14 October 1918.
On February 25, 1920, at Brockville, Leeds, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Ernest John Allen, 25, tanner, born in Somerset, England, to John Allen and Mary Best; and Elizabeth McCall, 20, companion maid, born in Scotland to Edwin [McCall] [error on document shows father as Edwin Best] and Jessie Stuart.
On July 23, 1922, Elizabeth McCall Allen, 21, housewife, born August 27, 1900, died at Kingston General Hospital of supperative otitis medea and septic meningitis. The informant was her husband, Ernest Allen, who resided at Phillipsville, Ontario, Canada. She was buried at Oak Leaf Cemetery.
