Frances Oldham had married James Clarey in 1884 in Rotherham, Derbyshire, England (Year of Registration: 1884; Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep; District: Rotherham; County: Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Yorkshire - West Riding; Volume: 9c; Page: 783.) James Clarey's death was not found in the GRO index.
The Parish Church of Rotherham (Yorkshire) shows that David was registered under the last name of Clerey. His mother is listed as Francis Clerey a Widow. David Clarey's birth is listed as 20 Jul 1899, christening 2nd Aug 1899.
In 1901, David Clarey, 1 year of age, was shown residing as a boarder at the home of David Barnett, 44, and his daughter, Mary Barnett, 6, at 5 Pottery Row, Rotherham, Derbyshire, England. Other family members were: Annie Clarey, 4; and Frances Clarey, 30, widow.
David had two other siblings beyond Ann: Mary, born 1893, and John William Cleary, born 1902. John's surname is spelled differently because his mother Frances, was illiterate.
Frances Clarey admitted herself with her children Anne, David and John Willie on 14 Feb 1906. They were discharged on 20 March 1906. Frances Clarey again admitted her family on 6 June 1906. They are described as Frances Clarey (B. 1867), Mary (B.1893), Anne (B.1896), David (B. 1898), and John (B. 1902). Frances absconded from the workhouse on 20 April 1907, presumably abandoning her children. David and his siblings remained in the Workhouse for various periods- David was the first to leave, on 9 May 1907 (possibly it was at this time that he went to live with the Dixon Family, Far Lane Rotherham). Mary left on 18 November, 1907, John left on 12 August 1908 and Anne on 6 July, 1911. David Clarey was known for a short period as Harold Dixon. He eventually entered Barnardos.
In 1914, David Clarey, 14, arrived at St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, along with 2 other Barnardo boys en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
David Clarey married Elizabeth Gilbert on April 27, 1929 at Cookes United Church Toronto, York, Ontario, David and Eizabeth Clarey had two children: Elizabeth Rebecca; born April 19, 1930, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and David Joseph: born January 19, 1932, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
David Clarey lived in Little Britain, Ontario, near Lindsay. He died April 27 1991 in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada.
