In 1881, Grace Gaghan, 8 years of age, was shown residing at the Stoke Upon Trent Workhouse, Penkhull, Staffordshire, England, along with Stephen Gaghan, 7; Laura Gaghan, 5; Louisa Gaghan, 35, tailoress; and Patrick Gaghan, 13. EDITORS NOTE: Father, Stephen Geoghan, Sr., was not on the 1881 England census. He was on the 1901 census, a lodger, but stated he was unmarried. He died of heart disease on November 7, 1913, Highfield Infirmary, Knotty Ash, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. The eldest child, Patrick, was in the workhouse with the mother and other siblings, but disappeared after 1881. Louisa the mother had remarried in 1885 (stating on the certificate that she was a widow) to Alfred Davis, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England. It is theorized that she may have thought or been told that her first husband was dead, or he deserted her and went to Ireland.
In 1885, Grace Geoghegan, 12 (along with siblings, Stephen Geoghegan, 11, and Laura Geoghegan, 9) arrived at Quebec, Canada, with 136 children, Richard Yates in charge, probably en route to Ottawa. It was at this time that the Geoghan children's names were changed to Gagan.
On October 23, 1894, at Napanee, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Grace Gagan, 21, born in England, daughter of Stephen Gagan and Louisa Patterson; and Agustus Gartland, 39, widower (first wife Catherine Traynor), born in Tyendinaga, Ontario, Canada, son of James Gartland and Margaret Sweeney.
In 1901, Grace Gartland, 27, is shown residing at Deseronto, Hastings, Ontario, Canada, along with her husband Augustus Gartland, 50, com labourer, and children, Margaret Gartland, 13; Mary L. Gartland, 3; and Joseph Gartland, 1. Her date of birth is shown as August 9, 1873, and her immigration year as 1885. Twin sons, Gerome and Jerrold Gartland, aged 4 months, died within 3 days of each other (22nd - 25th of June, 1903) at Prince Street, Deseronto, Hastings, Ontario, Canada. Cause of death for both boys was infantile indigestion, duration 3 months. (EDITORS NOTE: A few years later, Grace gave birth to another set of twins, and they were stillborn.)

In 1911, Grace Gartland, 36, is shown residing at Brant Street, Deseronto, Hastings, Ontario, Canada, along with her husband Geo Gartland, 54, laborer, and children, Lunda Gartland, 13; and Grace Gartland, 1. Grace Gartland, aged 53 years, 7 months, died on March 22, 1931, in Hotel Dieu Hospital, Frontenac, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Cause of death was exhaustion due to carcinoma of the femur (duration 6 months). She was buried at Marysville, Deseronto, Hastings, Ontario, Canada. Augustus Gartland died at the age of 71 years at Belleville General Hospital, Hastings, Ontario, Canada. The cause of death of pneumonia and old age. He was buried at Marysville, Deseronto, Hastings, Ontario, Canada.
