1911 English Census records place widowed Mary Jane Carter at 36 Quail St, Oldham, Lancashire, England. In residence is Thomas (19), Nellie (17) and Alfred (11). Mary Jane works as a Charwoman, Thomas is an Ironworks Apprentice, and Nellie is a Cotton and Velvet Weaver by trade.

Attestation papers were signed 12 Nov 1914 in Toronto. Clifford Carter was born 11 Apr 1896 in Swinton, Lancashire, England. His Next of Kin was Mary Jane Carter of 36 Quail Street in Oldham, England. He was a labourer by trade. 5' 1 1/2" in height with blue eyes and fair hair. His religion was listed as Methodist.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers and Circumstances of Casualty state that he was killed accidentally while giving instruction to a class in the use of bombs. Death Due to Service. Casualty Sheet notes that there was a transcription error using the Service number 51600 and that necessary action was taken to amend the report.
