In 1921, Bessie Varndell, 12, arrived at Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, in a group of 133 Barnardo children en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Bessie was also known as Bessie Eleanor Lymer.

On March 10, 1927, Bessie Varndell / Lymer married Alexander Stephen Hazael (sometimes spelled Hazell) (born February 25, 1908 in Croydon, Surrey, England, to Frank Hazael and Elizabeth F. Chapman) in Ontario, Canada.

Bessie Varndell was mentioned in May 1927 edition of Dr Barnardo's Ups and Downs

They had three children: Joan Hazael, born March 12; Roy Malcolm Hazael born May 15, 1929, in North West Fulham, London, England; and Robert Alexander Hazael born January 12, 1928 in Kingsville, Ontario, Canada.

In July, 1928, Bessie Hazael, 20, and her infant son, Robert Hazael, 8 months, traveled back to England on the ship Montclare to visit her mother, Mrs. E. Varndell, who resided at 23 Martell Road, W. Dulwich, England S.E.21.

In September 1929, Alexander Hazael, 21, Bessie Hazael, 21, Robert Hazael, 1-1/2, and Roy Hazael, 4 months, traveled to England on the ship Montrose to visit a cousin, Miss D. Lymer, who resided at 32 Athelany Street, London. Alexander stated he was a farmer and and his employer was Mr. R. H. Scratch, in Kingsville, Ontario.

Alexander Stephen Hazael died July 26, 1994, in Leamington, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 86. Bessie Varndell Hazael died in April 16, 1999, in Leamington, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 90. They are buried in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Leamington, Ontario, Canada.
