with Mrs Joseph Wattam, farmer, P.O Waupoos, Prince Edward, Ontario

May 22 1900

Age 16, good home, employed as nurse girl, not strong or healthy in appearance, attends Methodist church, a fair scholar, character excellent, Wages $2 per month. A very truthful and obedient girl. She has no hard work here. They speak very considerately of her. She says that she is fond of Mrs Wattam and the children, and had no complaints to make. This girl is troubled with sore eyes (inflammation) and in fact was so afflicted prior to her emigration to Canada, but had greatly improved at the time she left England. She is of the opinion that she caught cold in them last winter. Dr Winter of Picton prescribed for her, but there does not appear to have been any marked improvement in her condition. She will return to Dr Barnardo's Peterborough Home for treatment. If she improves in this regard Mrs Wattam would be glad to take her back.

June 5 1900-This girl has returned to Peterborough and is being treated at the Nicholls Hospital. The Secretary of Dr Barnardo's Home, Peterborough under date of October 28th writes me as follows:-

"I am glad to be able to report to you a very great improvement in the condition of Emily Alice Conway's eyes and indeed almost a cure. The girl left the Nicholls Hospital on July 13th and returned to Hazel Brae. For some time she had daily treatment from the doctor at the hospital and with his sanction she was placed in a situation on October 15th. When she left us then the eyes were quite healed and she was having no treatment for them simply wearing dark glasses when in a strong light. I enclose her present address which is C/O Mrs D J Gibson, Bowmanville"
