Notes William Henry Carter was my great-uncle. I have previously claimed my great-grandfather, Thomas Carter, who was emmigrated with the same group of Fegan Home Children.
William was born in Shrivenham, Berkshire, England around 1884-86, the son of John Carter and Elizabeth Ann Thatcher. His mother died from a fall down the stairs in 1887 and after remarrying twice John was hanged in 1893 for murdering his second and third wives.
The boys entered the Farringdon workhouse but in 1894 both William and his brother Thomas were brought to Fegan's by one of their older sisters. In the spring of 1895 the boys were emmigrated to Canada with a Fegan's emmigation party on the S.S. Labrador. A half-brother John Nelson Carter (son of John Carter and his second wife Elizabeth Ann Alder) was emmigrated by Fegan's later in 1900.
The Fegan records follow Wiliam through several placements over the years:
1895 indentured to Willard Brown of Port Rowan, Ontario
1899 indentured to Alex J. McLaren of Melrose, Ontario
1900 indentured to Mr. Sirupkius ?? of Melrose, Ontario
Nov 1900 indentured to Mr. Bagely of Melrose, Ontario
1901 indentured to Mr. Robinson of Shannonville, Ontario
He was later that year listed as living in Bellville, Ontario, and Toronto, Ontario in 1903. The last entry in Aug of 1904 states that William's brother, Thomas, told Fegan's that William had married and taken land in the west.
I have been unable to trace William beyond this point.
