1901 English Census for John Wootten states him as a 7 year old boy born in Winchester, Hampshire, England, in residence at Saint Michael's Church of England as a Student. He is alone with no other apparent relations.

1906 Travel record aboard the Dominion, listed as John Woolton, 12 year old Labourer with a number of other children. From Liverpool England on 8 Mar 1906 to Portland, Maine. There was not a corresponding Library of Canada index for this boy under the name Wootten, however sources list him as a Barnardo's child.

Attestation papers for World War I were signed 26 Mar 1915 in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. Filed under Jack Francis Wootten, although papers state John. John was born in Winchester, England on 6 Dec 1896. His Next of Kin was Mrs. H.E. Wootten in Fairook, Eastleigh, England. John had previous military experience serving with the 5th C.G.A. for 6th months. His occupation was a Bank Clerk. 5'7" with blue eyes and dark hair, John had 3 vaccination marks on his left arm and a scan on his right knee.

Commonwealth War Graves Register claims Sergeant John Francis Wootten was Killed in Action near Abraham Heights, Passchendale.
He is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, West Flanders, Belgium, Plot 1, Row AA, Grave 7.
