NotesIn 1891, George Whitbread, 7 months of age, was residing at 3 Lime Grove, Clewer, Berkshire, England. Other family members included: Anthony Whitbread, 12; Ernest Whitbread, 5; mother Frances Whitbread, 39, charwoman; Harry Whitbread, 7; Isaac Whitbread, 10; Samuel Whitbread, 3; father Thomas Whitbread, 46, engineers labourer (debility is noted--weak or feeble; an infirmity); Thomas Whitbread, 18, footman.

Thomas Whitbread died January 31, 1895, at 57 years of age. He was then residing at 7 Hencroft Street Slough, England. He had been a private in the Grenadier Guards and acted as a soldier valet to Prince Edward of Sax-Weimar.

Soon afterwards, Frances Whitbread developed breast cancer and died. No help was available for her children and they were placed with Barnardo Homes.

George Whitbread, 10, arrived in Portland, Maine, with a group of 260 Dr. Barnardo children from London, England, to Toronto, Ontario (193), Peterborough, Ontario (6) and to Russell, Manitoba (60). Two of George's brothers Ernest (born 1886, sailed to Canada in 1897), and Samuel (born 1888, sailed on the same ship, Tunisian, with George), came to Canada with Barnardo Homes. They both settled in Uxbridge, Ontario. His other siblings, Thomas William, born 1876; Anthony Walter Edwin, born 1878; Isaac, born 1881; Henry 1883; and his sister, Rose.

George Whitbread, 21, hired man for James Merrick and family in Reach, Ontario, Canada. His birth date is shown as April 1890 and his immigration year as 1901.

On July 1, 1912, George James Whitbread, 21, married another home child, Mabel D. Booker, 18. George stated that he resided in Valentyne, Ontario, Canada; that he was a laborer; and that his parents names were Thomas Whitbread and Francis Grove. Mabel stated that she was 18; that she was a laborer; and that her parents names were Joseph Booker and Helen Littlefield.

George and Mabel Whitbread had two children, Harold Whitbread, and Rose May Whitbread (1917-1997)

George Whitbread died March 29, 1981, in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
