In 1887, Stephen Portsmouth, 14, arrived with three other "lads from Maidenhead Farm, Cookham Union, England" in a party of 57 persons from Church Emigration Society Group, 9, Victoria Chambers, Westminster, London, and en route to Rev. Sterne Light at Lansdowne, Ontario, Canada.
"Copy of Reports of Inspection of Pauper Children sent out to Canada made by Immigration Officers of the Dominion Government and received from the Colonial Office on the 12th December 1888.

Stephen Portsmouth, aged 15. From Cookham Union. Placed with Joseph Helfert (not John Hafferty), Lot 29 in 7th Con. Pittsburg Tp. Brewers Mills P.O.?Slow at work, careless and dirty in his habits, troubled with weakness of bladder, wets the bed, obedient, pleased with his home and treatment; good home."
