NotesBenjamin was the 4th. of 6 children of Walter and Phoebe(Lane) Roberts of Birmingham, Warwicks., England. His mother died soon after the birth of her 6th. child of bronchitis, aged 39 in 1892. For several years Walter and the 3 older daughters in the family kept the family unit together, with the exception of the baby who was fostered out. Ben and his younger brother John were frequently truant from school while the father worked as a low paid Gun Action Filer. the father was summonsed for these actions and fined. It is thought that because he could not pay that may have caused the admission of Ben and John to the Middlemore Home as these details were indicated on their record.

Benjamin and John arrived in New Brunswick in June 1896 and sent to Fredericton. As a ten year old, Ben was placed with Walter Patterson, a farmer just north of Fredericton at Meductic. His son later told that Ben was mistreated while he was on the Patterson farm, not sent to school and not paid as he was supposed to have been. In about 1902, once he had turned 16 he ran away and crossed the border into Houlton, Maine, USA. He remained there for the remainder of his life, woked for many years as a school janitor, married and raised 6 children.
