MIDDLEMORE HOME REPORTS

John James (aka Jack) went to the farm of J. Thompson, Smith Creek, Kings County, New Brunswick, where he stayed until he ran away in November 1907. Mr. W. E. S. Wetmore first visited this farm on December 22, 1905, just a short while after placing him to see if both the child and the employer were well suited. His report states, "Boy has a good home and has picked up the work very well. Is going to school and likes his place. Seems very bright."

Mr. Wetmore went back to the Thompson farm to do another report on December 14, 1906. His report reads, "The child is in good health and has sufficient supply of clothing. The home is satisfactory, and the child attends Church and Sunday School in the summer and is currently attending Day School. The child has made no complaints, however, the employer does state that the "boy is unruly" and does not receive wages". Mr. Wetmore goes on to include in his report, "The people are an elderly couple and are fond of the boy. Were too fond and easy. I think as the boy is pretty sharp and has taken an advantage of them, giving them at times a good deal of trouble, and is saucy with the mistress of the home."

On September 11, 1907, Frank A Gerrow visited the home and his reports states, "The home is only fiar, and the child does attend Day School in winter and is still not receiving wages." Mr. Gerrow goes on to state, "Both Mr. Thompson and the boy were away. Mrs. Thompson said that he was getting along fairly well."

November 13, 1907, they received a letter from Mr. Thompson reporting that the boy had run away. There is no report of where they found John and the next report is on January 11th, 1908 stating that they placed him with Hugh McElroy, Rockville, Kings County, New Brunswick.

November 14, 1908, Frank A. Gerrow visits the farm of Mr. McElroy and reports, "The home is satisfactory, the child is in good health, and has a sufficient supply of clothing. There are no complaints from the child or the employer. The child attends Church and Sunday School irregular and will be attending Day School in the winter and is not receiving wages." Mr. Gerrow than notes, "Boy is doing well in his home."

July 23, 1909, Mr. Gerrow again visits the farm of Mr. McElroy and reports, "The home is satisfactory, the child is in good health, and has a sufficient supply of clothing. There are no complaints from the child or the employer. The child has been attending Church and Sunday School regularly and he did attend Day School last winter. The child now receives wages of $4.00 per month."

October 18, 1909, they receive a letter from Mr. McElroy which states, "Our boy, John J Tubb, has become discontented and wants a change. I thingk that it would be advisable to move him, as we do not want any trouble with him. He was a fairly good boy until his brother, Philip, came up here from Bloomfield, and since then he has been discontented and hard to get along with."

On November 2, 1909 they placed John on the farm of Mr. Hamilton Yeomans, Sussex, Kings County, New Brunswick.
July 16, 1910, Mr. Gerrow visits the farm of Mr. Yeomans and reports, "The home is satisfactory and the child is in good health and has sufficient supply of clothing. There are no complaints from the child or the employer. The child has been attending Church and Sunday School regularly, but has not attended Day School. The child is now receiving $6.00 per month for wages."

The next time we hear about Jack is on the 1911 Studholme, Kings County Census and we see that he is with his brother, Philip and they are boarders at the home of the Mallory brothers, Benjamin and Obediah. Also, this census tells us that Tom is still residing with Levi Parlee.
