He was described as 5 foot 7-3/4 inches in height; fair complexion; brown hair; blue eyes. He had a brown scar on his forehead. He had been born in Birmingham, England.

Edwin Clayton registered for the United States draft in San Luis Obispo, California. He declared that he resided at Park Street, Paso Robles, San Luis, Obispo, California; that his date of birth was December 20, 1874; that he was born in Great Britain; that he was a laborer, non employed; that his next of kin was his wife, Martha A. Clayton. He was described as 5 foot 7-3/4 inches in height; medium build; blue eyes; brown hair and physically unfit for duty.
