In 1901, Albert Ellis, 9 years of age, was residing at 1 House, 4 Court, 35 George Street, Tamworth, Staffordshire, England. Other family members included: Frank Ellis, 6; Arthur T. Ellis, 22, general labourer; Ethel Ellis, 11; Henry Ellis, widower, 54, gardener; James Ellis, 3; and William J. Ellis, 20, coal miner. In 1905, Albert Ellis, 11 (along with brothers, James Ellis, 8, and Frank Ellis, 10) arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with a group of 142 children from Middlemore's Childrens Immigration Homes, Birmingham, England, en route to the Fairview Home, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. (His sister, Ethel Ellis, arrived the same year on the Bavaria with Waifs & Strays and was sent to St. John, New Brunswick.)

On November 9, 1915, at Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada, Albert Ellis, 21, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided at Russiagonish, New Brunswick, Canada; that he was born in Tamworth, England; that his next of kin was his father, Henry Ellis, who resided in Tamworth, England; that his date of birth was July 24, 1894; that he was a laborer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 2-1/2 inches in height; medium complexion; blue eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Baptist faith.
