In 1904, William Slade, 5 (along with her siblings, Arthur Slade, 7, and Annie Slade, 10) arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with a group of 104 children from Middlemore, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.

On December 27, 1915, at Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, William Slade, 19, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared he was born in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia, Canada; that he resided in Guysboro, Nova Scotia; that his next of kin was his brother, Arthur Slade, who resided in Rockingham, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; that his date of birth was May 24, 1896; that he was not married; and that he was a carpenter. He was described as 5 foot 8 inches in height; fresh complexion; blue eyes; dark brown hair. He had a scar 2 inches long on his right thigh.

On October 17, 1934, William Arthur Slade, 35, truck driver, residing in California (USA), crossed into Canada through the port of Houlton, Maine, USA, with his wife, Margaret Slade, 28, born in Vienna, Austria, and his son, William A. S. Slade, 7, born in Los Angeles, California, USA. He declared that he was born in Birmingham, England; that he had previously resided in Mulgrave, Guysboro, Nova Scotia, Canada; that his final destination was to his adopted father, Sidney W. Hagerty, Monastery, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada; that his nearest relative in the USA was his brother, Arthur Slade, who resided at 1845 E. Second Street, Los Angeles, California; and that he had been previously rejected entry into Canada, but had appealed which was sustained by the Minister of Immigration on October 24, 1934, upon which he was rejected entry.
