NotesHerbert was placed at Fairbridge Farm School, Pinjarra, Western Australia. He was one of a party of 22 'orphaned boys' aged under 12 sent to Australia under the auspices of the Child Emigration Society, organised by Rhodes scholars at Oxford.

He served in the Australian Army:

He died in 1956, aged 52, and is buried at Midland Cemetery (Baptist E78) with wife Ethel who died 13 Aug 1957, aged 56.
