NotesJohn was the 5th. of 6 children born to Walter & Phoebe (Lane) Roberts in Birmingham, Warwicks, England. His mother died of bronchitis at the age of 39 when he was 4. For a few years the father and older sisters kept the family together but the father was a Gun Action filer and poorly paid. John and his older brother Ben were frequently truant from school and the father was fined money he could not pay. This appears to have been the reasoning behind signing John and Ben to the Middlemore Home in 1895 and they arrived in Fredericton, New Brunswick in June of 1896. John was fortunately taken in by the family of J.H. Donovan as he was rather small for an 8 year old and not suited for farm work. Instead he was educated, taught the printing trade and learned to play a number of musical instruments. Eventually he ran his own printing business in Fredericton, married and raised 4 children before dying on November 25, 1938 of a heart attack.
