After the death of his mother, George was taken in by Pauline Wicks, a kindly woman who had five children, but all had died by 1911. Middlemore had reported that all of the Jones children had been in "dire straights" healthwise.

A letter written by George to Middlemore Homes while he was serving in the war stated that he wanted to find and visit his family, but he did not who or where they were. All that he could remember was that a "Polline Wicks" (Pauline Wicks) brought him to Middlemore and that she lived at "the end of the Heneage."

George believed that his name was Wicks and that he changed it aboard ship to Jones. His correct name was Jones. He was the son of Stephen William Jones (injured while working for a gas company and unable to care for his large bunch of children) and Mary Ann Wills (died in 1909 from stomach cancer and heart failure).

His father, Stephen William Jones, was living with his aunt and uncle (names unknown) at 197 Francis St., Ashted in April of 1910 when the children were taken to Middlemore. They could not, however, shelter him and the remaining children much longer, and they were mostly taken in by other relatives or sent to poor houses. Stephen was in the 1911 census in Union Workhouse, Erdington.

Stephen died in 1919 at The Sanitorium, Yardley Road, Sparkbrook of tuberculosis and cardiac failure.

In 1910, George Jones, 10, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 154 Middlemore children.

George was placed with Marshall and Agnes McLaggan in York, New Brunswick, Canada.
