(Parents believed to be Peter Hodge and Alice Green of 118 Ryland Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham.)

In 1901, William Hodge, 2 years of age, was shown residing as a boarder at the home of Walter and Rhoda Newton of 14 James Nott Terrace, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, along with his parents: Alice Green, 46, hotel kitchen maid; and Peter Hodge, 44, India rubber works fireman. He was fostered by William and Julia Bernia Crawford.

In 1910, William Hodge, 11, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, along with a group of 154 Middlemore children.

He was placed on a farm up in a Village in the hills from Sussex (now a ghost town), Gottia, New Brunswick, Canada.

On November 10, 1916, William Hodge, 18, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that resided at Mountaindale, Kings, New Brunswick, Canada; that he was born in Birmingham, England; that his next of kin was his mother, Mrs. Alice Hodge, who resided at 118, Ryland Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, England; that he was born August 14, 1898; that he was a farmer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 5 inches in height; medium complexion; brown eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Baptist faith. His great toe on his right foot had been split open with an axe.
