NotesParents: John Elias Hughes and Harriett Dabbs, married 1888 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.

Thomas and Ernest Hughes' mother, Harriett, died approximately 1905 leaving 7 children. Only Thomas and Ernest were sent away, the others remained in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. Father, John Elias Hughes remarried long after other children grown.

In 1910, Ernest Hughes, 8 (along with brother, Thomas Hughes, 10), arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 154 Middlemore children.

Thomas Hughes was one of the lucky ones. His placement consisted of a a loving family, education, and warm abode. The host family's daughters became "aunts" to future generations of Hughes and remained close to them until their respective deaths.

On June 8, 1917, at Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada, Thomas Hughes, 18, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided at Central Kings clear, York, New Brunswick, Canada; that he was born in Birmingham, England; that his next of kin was his father, John Hughes, who resided at 3 Back of 82 Great Russell Street, Birmingham, England; that his date of birth was August 5, 1898; that he was a farmer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 3-1/2 inches in height; fresh complexion; grey eyes; light brown hair. He was a member of the Methodist faith.
