Edith Hall

Date of Birth: 6th May 1886

On September 24th Edith was admitted to Avenue House, Peckham.

On May 22nd 1901 she was baptised at St Chrysostonis (?sp) Peckham

On February 17th 1902 she was accepted for Emigration (by the Committee), and Mrs Ebenezer Davies was informed of the decision on March 7th.

On May 8th 1902 Edith emigrated to ?Our Western Home?, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, per S.S. Numidian.

There is a certified copy of Edith?s birth certificate. This shows that Edith Hall was born on Sixth May 1886 at 1 new Orchard Street, Swansea. Her parents are named as George Hall, and Ann Hall, late Chaplin, formerly Owen. Her father?s occupation is given as Mariner. The informant was her mother, of 1 new Orchard Street.

The correspondence gives additional information.

On August 31st 1900 Mrs Daview wrote to the Society asking for Edith to be
taken into one of their Homes. She said that the father drank and the stepmother and two stepsisters drank and led immoral lives. Edith was found situations and would not keep them.

On September 8th Mrs Davies wrote again to say that the family could not help financially. When Edith?s mother died Edith ?was taken by an old woman who has really brought her up but who is a cripple and I believe on the Parish. I think it will be the best, by far, for her welfare, to send her to Canada?.

There is then a notice of Baptism (a Society form, not a Baptismal Certificate) which shows that Edith was baptised on May 22nd 1901 at St. Chrysostonis.

The next document is a Medical form for Emigration, dated January 28th 1902. All the questions are answered and indicate that Edith was in good health. She was ?suitable for farm work? and ?a suitable subject for emigration to Canada?. There is also a form of consent to emigration, which had been signed by Edith?s father on September 7th 1900 (signed by ?X his mark?), and witnessed by the Curate of St. James?.
Edith Hall

The application for Edith to be received into the care of The Church of England Incorporated Society for Provinding Homes for Waifs and Strays was made on September 7th 1900. The Curate of St. James, Swansea completed and signed the form, and certified that the questions had been replied to by Edith?s father, George Hall.

The form shows that Edith was born on May 6th, 1886 in Swansea. There is a reference to the attached birth certificate (see below). Only her father was alive. Her mother had died of heart disease on December 22nd 1891. her father, George hall, lived at 12 Sloane Street, and worked as a labourer earning 10/- per week. Edith?s parents had never received Parish Relief.

The form states that Edith had a stepbrother and stepsisters (no details given). Her aunt, Mrs Philips, lived in Union Row and was said to have a large family. ?She has two uncles, but nothing is known of them, they do not live in Swansea?.

Edith attended Rutland Board School and also Sunday School at the Church of England Parochial Schools. She had been for a short time in the Swansea Workhouse (reason not given). Her general health was good. She had had whooping cough and measles.

The father stated he had no objection to Emigration.

There is a short report on the circumstances. ?Mrs Ebenezer Davies (presumably the local society Visitor) has enquired into the case of Edith Hall fully and she is of the opinion that her removal from Swansea is most desirable. Edith has a stepmother whose two daughters are both prostitutes and they are continually enticing Edith away from her situation, her father drinks and is constantly out of work ? Edith has neither brothers nor sisters of her own?.

There is a list of Placements on the back of the form. The Committee decided to ?Accept for Peckham with a view to Emigration? on September 13, 1900, and it is noted that the decision was sent to Mrs Hall on September 18th 1900.
The last document is a ?Lady Visitor?s Report? made on June 15th 1903. She had paid ?a surprise visit.? At the time Edith was 17 and was placed with mr Davidson, a School Inspector of Newmarket, Ontario (full address not given). ?Mrs Davidson is not at home, has left Edith in the care of a friend. Edith said ?I have a lovely place at the Davidson?s. She is very kind to me and I am getting on very well, I hope I shall keep this nice place?. Edith?s general appearance was said to be ?very happy looking, neat and tidy?. She received wages of $4.00. Her clothing was ?very nice and suitable?. The labour was said to be suitable for her age and she always attended church.
