NotesA birth registration was found for Richard Dowse: Year of Registration: 1890; Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun; District: Lambeth; County: Greater London, London, Surrey; Volume: 1d; Page: 383. Parents: Charles Dowse and Mary Ann Slater, married 1880, Marylebone, London, England.

Richard Dowse was admitted May 2, 1899, to Lambeth Workhouse, and transferred May 4, 1899 to Lambeth Union Schools,

Richard had been admitted from 19 Hunt Street on application of his sister, Mary, who was unable to maintain the child. His mother, Mary Ann, had died in Lambeth Infirmary on February 27, 1898. His father, Charles, was a dustman and had been run over and killed at Norwood on January 16, 1899.

His sister Mary, of 240 Southwark Park Road, was in service.

Richard was discharged to Barnardo's Home on June 12, 1901.

In 1901, R. Dowser, 11, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a large group of Barnardo children: 239 to Toronto, Ontario; 68 to Winnipeg, Manitoba; 20 to Russell, Manitoba; and 3 to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

Feb 5 1903, with James Taylor, Grenfell, Assiniboia,

Age 13, good home, employed at chores, health good, has not been at church yet nor at school, church is three miles off and the school four-intend sending the boy to school this work, character honest-his worst fault is bad language-swearing, but is willing and obedient. Terms-$100 distributed over a term of four years as follows $10, $20, $30 and $40 per annum. Mr and Mrs Taylor and the children seem kind, good people. The eldest boy at home is companion to young Dowse, and they generally work at the chores together. I examined the boy privately and he told me that he is very well treated, well fed, well clothed and not overworked, and as far as the family is concerned, he is well placed.
