NotesHerbert Potten born at 139 Mayall Road, Herne Hill on 7.11.87, admitted to Norwood Schools on several occasions between 1896 and 1901.

Brother Thomas and Sister Edith also admitted

This child was discharged c/o of Mother and sibling Horace admitted in his place by direction of the board but was readmitted on
11 November 1899 the mother being unable to control the boy as she was out at work all day. The mother to pay 1/- per week
whereabouts of mother unknown since 1 January 1901. On 12 June 1901 Herbert was dsicharged to Dr Barnardo Homes.

On 10 August 1899 Thomas Potten was discharged to mother
On 10 May 1902, Edith Potten was discharged to aunt Mrs Stapley, 2 Coalbrook Mansions, Bedford Hill, Balham
On 26th November 1904, Horace Potten left the School to go to Exmouth Training Ship

Age 14, comfortable home, employed at general chores, healthy, attends Baptist Church and Sunday School, character-well behaved, Potten says that he is generally well used. The only complaint that he has to make is that "they jaw him considerably"
Mr Cooper states that the boy is slow and that he sometimes loses patience with him, and he finds it hard to teach him, but he thinks that he is improving.

On 12 April 1910, Herbert Potten aged 23, was refused entry to America via Buffalo. He had named his sister-Mrs F Blackwell, 284 Campbell Buildings, Westminster, London, England, as his next of kin. He was going to a friend-Ed Kerr, 38 Flatbush? Avenue, Brooklyn, NY
