Notes In 1887, Alfred Taylor, 5, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 12 children from Miss Wemyss in Painswick, Gloucestershire, England, en route to Marchmont Home, Belleville, Ontario, Canada.
Letter dated 28th February 1888 to Mrs. Steele, Emigration Home, from Mrs. J.C. [EDITORS NOTE: Mrs. James Carty], Collfield PO, Province of Quebec, "who has provided a home for Alfie Taylor." [The Painswick Magazine, August, 1888, p. 108 & 109]
"Mrs. Steele,
I have the little boy, Alfred Taylor, since the 14th of October last, having received him from the Marchmont Home, Belleville, Ontario. I have before me the letter you wrote to dear little Alfie. You will be happy to hear that Alfie is a very good boy, loving and kind in his disposition, and if he lives to grow up to manhood, he shall be well provided for if he continues to deserve it. He has been sick for a week or so, in the beginning of this month, but is now himself again. I pray that I may have grace to lead him to Jesus. Can you tell me, is he of respectable parentage, whether any of his friends are living, and any particulars regarding him that you may be possessed of. Of course you will understand that any communications you may make concerning him shall not be communicated to him at any time, unless they are of a pleasing character, on this you may fully rely. Alfie has many fond recollections of you, indeed he talks more of you than any other of whom he speaks, he send you his love and will be glad to hear from you whenever you will be kind enough to write to us. If you know anything about him, kindly let me know his age. I do not know your address fully, but I trust this will find you. Trusting that you will be largely blessed in your work for Jesus,
I remain, yours very truly,
Mrs. J.C.
