1911 Canadian Census records place Hugh Patton as a Domestic in the household of Louisa and Robert Wallace Lumgair in Lot 50, Selkirk, Kildonan east of Red River, Manitoba. Hugh is listed only as 24 years of age, from Scotland having immigrated in 1902.

20 Aug 1913 Marriage records for Bedford, Lanark, Ontario states that Hugh Paton wed Ida May Bain. Hugh's parents are listed as Margaret and James Paton, he states he was born in Belvidere, Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a labourer in Smith Falls, Ontario.

Attestation papers were signed 22 Jul 1915 in Barriefield Camp, Ontario. Hugh George Paton was born in 1893 in Glasgow, Scotland. He was a labourer by trade. His Next of Kin was his Wife, Ida May Paton of Crow Lake, Ontario, Canada. He had previous Military experience with C. Co 47th Regt. 5' 2 1/2" in height with blue eyes and black hair, he had half a finger nail missing on his second finger, right hand, and a small birth mark on the left side of his chest. His religion was listed as Presbyterian.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers and Circumstances of Casualty state that he was previously reported Missing after a Mine Explosion while on duty in a sap at Zillebeke, West Flanders, Belgium, but later reported Killed in Action. His Next of Kin confirms his wife, Ida Mae Bain Paton, and that she remarried and her surname was Cota. His body was not recovered, his name is listed on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium.

Ida Bain Cota remarried to Wilbert Marshall Cota of Ontario, Canada. The pair had one daughter. Ida is buried with Marshall in Parham Village Cemetery, Parham, Frontenac, Ontario.
