NotesWilliam Thomas Charles was born in 1879, the son of Thomas Charles and his wife Caroline Lock. His mother died in 1888 in Worcester City, Worcestershire, England leaving her husband and nine children. Unable to look after his family, the father split up the children sending William and a younger brother, Walter to the locally located Royal Albert Orphan Asylum.
A few years later, whereas Walter remained in Worcester, William was sent by Marchmont Homes to Canada in 1894. Arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia aboard the "Sarnia" on April 9th, after two more days, he was boarding at his first farm near St. Catherine's, Ontario.
According to excerpts of letters that William wrote to those at Marchmont placements, the young man seemed to be happy with his home and treatment. Apparently in search of higher wages, in time, however, he did move on, twice going to other farms in the area. Around the fall of 1897, at age 18, he left the umbrella of the Marchmont group and set out on his own.
Upon arriving in Rat Portage (now Kenora, Ontario), William found work. And in 1901, he was married and then began a family.
Sometime in 1910 or 1911 he moved his family to Medicine Hat, Alberta where he worked on the trains. As a car brakeman, he was killed in 1912, when he slipped off the train falling beneath the wheels. He left behind his wife, Maria (Brunsell) Charles and two young sons.
Previously around 1905-06, William's uncle, Alfred Charles along with his wife and son (also named William) emigrated from England to Toronto, Canada. It is not known whether William T. Charles had a chance to connect again with his uncle and cousin.
