NotesIn 1894, Arthur Blackwell, 9, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 149 Grenfell Association children accompanied by Mr. Wallace. Arthur was sent by Kensington Union (from Union School at Banstead).

June 8 1894, with Cornelius Vanwyck, Balaclava:

Arthur is in a house with only one other child, a little girl. He is very quiet and slow in his movements but Mr V thinks they will get on nicely together as Arthur seems kind and willing to obey. He has a comfortable home and is close to church and school.

Arthur was not pleased to see visitor as he had an idea he wanted to take him away, he likes his place so well would not leave on any account. Did not attend school regularly on account of distance and stormy weather but will try to make it up next year. Goes to church.

September 16 1896, C Vanwyck, Balaclava

I did not find anyone at home but heard that Arthur was well, getting on nicely and learning to be useful. He and his master had gone to market with some fat cattle

June 17 1897

Arthur has not improved as much as was anticipated, he is more useful in some respects but untruthful cannot be trusted to do anything alone. He does not want to leave his home so perhaps he will try and do better. Mr V is superintendent of the Sunday school and Arthur attends regularly.

In December 1909, Arthur Blackwell, 25, farmer, crossed into the United States through the port of St. Albans, Vermont. He declared that he resided at Indian Head, Ontario, Canada; that he had no relative; that his final destination was Des Moines, Iowa. He was described as 5 foot 6 inches in height; medium complexion; brown eyes; brown hair. He was born in Bothwill, England; and came to Montreal, Canada about 1893.
