NotesMy grandfather, Richard James Webster, was born in Bombay, India 18 April 1875. In trying to construct my family tree, I found him, his brother and parents on the 1881 Census of Britain and Wales. The group was: father James, mother Annie Rothery, Harry, brother also born India around 1873 and Richard. I had no luck with any trace after that, until he turned up at the farm of my grandmothers uncle, George Smith, in the late 1890's. He then moved to Saskatchewan, homestead there and came back in 1906 to marry my grandmother and take her to their new farm. She died in 1909, leaving Dick with two small boys. He returned to Ontario in around 1910, left the boys with his mother-in-law and went back West. Last we knew of him. No proven documentation after this date, only hearsay and speculation.

My sister-in-law took up the roots quest just about a year ago. She determined that Dick was a Home Child, sponsored by Barnardos. Per their documents, his father died 4 years before he was sent to Canada, mother some time before that. His brother, Harry, was living in the refuge. This took place in Preston, Manchester, Lancs, UK.

I have the documents from the sending Agency, Salford and Manchester Boys and Girls Refuge and Home, now The Together Trust.

I have since learned that Dick married Sarah Jane McBryde McIntosh in Alberta in 1912. She had three children, only two came to Canada. One son, Thomas McBryde McIntosh, lived with them. He came over with a group of children from Quarriers. He and his sister, Sarah Mitchell McIntosh, had been left there by their mother as she could not support them and was off to Canada to meet her sister and make a new life.

Richard Webster and Sarah ended up in Vancouver, per family stories, and have been found on various Census reports. Sarah died in 1955 and Richard died in 1964.
