Mabel had a brother, Peter French, and sister, Irene French. All three children were placed in Barnados homes when their father died. Mabel was sent to Canada, but Peter and Irene were sent to Australia.

Mabel French was sponsored by Newbury County Girls School in Berkshire to go to Canada in 1920.

In 1920, Mabel Edith B French, 14, arrived at Quebec, Canada, along with a group of 86 girls en route to Hazel Brae Home in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

Mabel may have married a James Kelly and had two sons.
