Parents: Herbert Allen and Elizabeth Anne Singleton, married 1890, in Hackney, London, England.

On February 18, 1903, Lionel Arthur Singleton Allen, born December 9 1897, was baptised at West Green Christ Church, Haringey, England, son of Herbert and Elizabeth Anne Allen of 12 Cranleigh Road, West Green. Also baptised that day Gladys Isabella born Feb 27 1896, Alfred William Percy born June 23 1895, and Herbert Edwin born October 27 1890.

On November 25 1915, Lionel Arthur Allen, born December 9, 1898, in London, England, enlisted in Canadian Army. He gave his next of kin as his friend-Mr W H Spencer, Ridgetown, Ontario, and declared that he resided in the same place. He was a farmer and was not married. He was described as 5 foot 6-1/4 inches in height; tan complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair. He was a member of the Methodist faith. Lionel was taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion in France on August 20, 1916. He was sent to England to attend the Officer's Training Course on January 12, 1918, and rejoined the 38th Battalion as a lieutenant on August 23, 1918.

On September 30 1918 it was reported that "This officer was wounded on 29 September by a Machine Gun bullet while in the neighbourhood of the DOUAI-CAMBRAI ROAD in front of Sailly at about noon, he was immediately attended to, and as soon as possible evacuated but succumbed to his wounds the following day."

Lieutenant Lionel Arthur Singleton Allen died of wounds received during the Battle of the Canal du Nord. He is buried in Duisans Military Cemetery, Etrun (4 Miles North North East of Arras, France.)

Lionel Arthur Singleton Allen's "death penny," a small bronze plaque that was given to a fallen soldier's next of kin during the First World War, can be seen at the Canadian Military Heritage Museum, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada.
