Tilbury couple, teen die

2 separate area accidents

by Alan Anderson

CHATHAM Death claimed three lives in two moments of violence on district roads Friday night.

An elder Tilbury couple died in the wreckage of their car on the Essex county side of the Tilbury Wheatley townline the boundary between Essex and Kent. A young couple and their two small girls were taken to hospital.

. . .

Dead are:

George Baker, 63, 12 Tilbury Street, his wife Corunna, 64.

A crew from Masse Ambulance Service, Tilbury worked for about half an hour to free the body of Mrs Baker. The passenger side of the car, a 1964 Rambler, was crushed when it was hit broadside.

Mr. Baker, who was thrown from the car was pronounced dead on arrival at Chatham's Public General Hospital.

Driver the second car, a 1956 Plymouth, Richard Hillman, 22, of RR 2 Wheatley, was treated at the same hospital for minor injuries and released.

His wife, Darlene, 21, is in a satisfactory condition. She is suffering from shock.

Their two small daughters Laurie Lynn, 3, and Wendy, 2, are in fair condition. Laurie Lynn has facial cuts and Wendy head and arm injuries.

They were all taken to hospital by Hornick Ambulance Service Tilbury.

Investigating office, Constable Gary Daly of Essex OPP, said early today the accident occurred when the Baker vehicle swung into the path of the Hillman car, three miles south of Tilbury.

Constable Daly said the Hillman car was travelling south and the Baker car north.

Both vehicles stopped on the south side of the road blocking traffic heading towards Wheatley. Motorists were held up for about half an hour while the dead and injured were removed from the badly damaged cars.

Damage was estimated to total about $2,000.

. . .

Mrs Baker, better known in Tilbury area as Clara (Tetreault) Baker, was born in Tilbury, and lived there all her life.

. . .

Mr. Baker, born in England came to Canada as a young boy and lived most of his life in the Tilbury area.

Surviving are his foster mother Mrs. Alma Hornick and foster brother, Gerald Hornick, both of Tilbury East Township, sister Mrs Frances Hartley, Tilbury and step-children of Mrs. Baker.

Funeral arrangements which are incomplete are being handled by Masse Funeral Home Tilbury.
