Sarah Ballard, 43, died on November 23, 1898, at the Workhouse Infirmary, Western Road, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, of mitrial disease and cardiac failure.

In 1900, Walter Ballard, 11, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 108 Middlemore children en route to the Maritime Provinces.

On June 2, 1915, at Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada, Walter Ballard, 26, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Stanley, New Brunswick, Canada; that his next of kin was his father, Harry Ballard, who resided in Stanley, New Brunswick, Canada; that his date of birth was March 27, 1889; that he was a farmer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 6 inches in height; medium complexion; brown eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England.

On October 1, 1918, Private Walter Ballard was with some comrades in a shell hole during heavy enemy machine gun and shell fire. As the shells were bursting very close, Walter got up to go to another shell-hole and while running to shelter, he was hit in the head by an enemy machine gun bullet and instantly killed. He is buried at Sancourt British Cemetery, Nord, France. [Grave Reference: I. D. 3.]
